Study Tour to the Bioenergy Power Plant in Zhytomyr

Over ten years, the city of Zhytomyr was able to reduce natural gas consumption by 50% by switching to biomass. Ten years ago, the city consumed about 100 million cubic meters of gas annually, and by 2022 this indicator will decrease to 51 million cubic meters.

This and much more was learned by a group of Kyiv School of Energy Policy (KSEP) students and graduates during the Study Tour organized by the KSEP with the support of the Representative Office of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Ukraine (FES-Ukraine).

During the visit to the bioenergy thermal power plant, visitors saw how this plant works on biomass, providing heat to seven social facilities and one residential neighborhood of the city (more than 40 houses). It is important to note that this plant not only provides reliable heat supply, but is also a cost-effective solution.

Zhytomyr is a vivid example for other cities of Ukraine. The path they have taken in the energy transformation demonstrates how a clean and sustainable energy future can be achieved. After visiting the bioenergy thermal power plant in Zhytomyr and learning more about the principles of its operation, participants understood how important it is to improve energy systems and look for more sustainable solutions. This trip gave an opportunity to see the practical results of innovations in action and create a basis for the further development of sustainable energy in Ukraine.
