Podcasts about Women and War: “1325: Women, Peace and Security — From the UN to Ukraine”

In 2026, Hromadske Radio, together with the NGO Women in Media, released the third season of the podcast project “1325: Women, Peace and Security — From the UN to Ukraine”, with the support of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Office in Ukraine. The project translates the Women, Peace and Security agenda from the language of international resolutions into the realities of a country at war, showing how questions of equality, participation and protection directly affect Ukraine’s defence, resilience and future recovery.

The third season focused on the changing role of women during Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. Through interviews and expert discussions, Hromadske Radio and Women in Media brought together women serving in the military, working with defence technologies, supporting communities, documenting abuses in occupied territories, dealing with the psychological consequences of Russian attacks, and contributing to Ukraine’s reconstruction. The programmes also addressed problems that remain insufficiently visible, including harassment in the Armed Forces, accessibility, gender-specific persecution under occupation and the influence of Russian propaganda. The season was hosted by journalists Anastasiia Bahalika and Liza Kuzmenko.

Women, Peace and Security agenda is not an abstract discussion. In Ukraine, women are directly involved in defence, technological innovation, public administration, humanitarian response and recovery, while at the same time experiencing specific security risks created by the war. Giving these experiences greater public visibility helps broaden the national security debate and strengthens the principle that women should participate not only in coping with the consequences of war, but also in shaping decisions about security, peace and reconstruction.

The 2026 series continued a project already established over two previous seasons. The project has sought to make the Women, Peace and Security agenda understandable through the experiences, expertise and voices of Ukrainian women.
